Why CS4NC Matters
Since retiring as VP and GM of Lenovo, a global leader in technology, Tom Looney holds many Executive and Board seats and leads several initiatives including CS4NC.
Tom is a strong advocate for Coastal Environmental Efforts/Oyster Mariculture. He has been an active Board Member NC Coastal Federation since 2015 and led an effort over the past four years to build the oyster mariculture business in NC to $100M and create 1000 jobs for our rural coastal communities while preserving and protecting our coastal assets.
He is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Wake Tech Community College. His focus at Wake Tech has been securing tech business ownership of our RTP campus through support for curriculum, internships, technology and scholarships for underrepresented minorities and women. Today the board is 60% women and includes senior executives and entrepreneurs from organizations such as WakeMed, IBM, Cisco, MetLife and Mako Medical.
Additionally, Tom is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the NC School of Science and Mathematics. He was asked by Governor Perdue to join the Board of Trustees but was unaware of the school and its mission. He very quickly learned that NCSSM was the crown jewel of education in NC. His main focus was directed to on-line students, summer programs and interactive video conferencing classes across our state. NCSSM has upgraded four IVC studios and built a business plan for summer programs that today supports 1000+ students from 74 counties which is self funding and revenue positive. NCSSM has also broken ground for a new campus in Morganton that is scheduled to open in 2021.
Tom is a founding member and was an Executive Board Member of the Economic Development Partnership of NC. EDPNC is the business recruitment and tourism engine for the NC Department of Commerce. This organization was created to deliver speed, ease of doing business and flexibility in our business recruitment process. Key success factors in business. Tom leveraged a cross functional team from Lenovo that developed performance base compensation, operational metrics, performance management and segment- based marketing.
Rounding out Tom’s experiences he sits on the Board of Trill AI and is Chief Revenue Officer mentoring young entrepreneurs. Asked by a lead investor, Tom mentored the founder who turned out to be NCSSM graduate. Tom has been working with Trill AI for the past three years.
